Welcome to the Copper Classic Speech & Debate Tournament!

We hope that you choose to attend our tournament in the coming weeks!

We aim to be one of the premier tournaments in Utah in terms of competition quality & hosting and are so excited to have our halls once again filled with the community of our state’s teams!

Our tournament is slated for December 15-16, 2023!
Please note debate events will be Friday and Speech will be Saturday.

LOGISTICS:

The tournament will be hosted in person at Bingham High School

Address: 2160 South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, Utah, 84095

On Friday it is recommended that teams arrive at Bingham by 2:45pm. There will be signs directing traffic to the cafeteria area for teams to congregate between rounds and the tech atrium that will be used for the Coaches/Judges lounge.

The Concessions table for students will be located in the cafeteria and will have Little Caesars pizza, chips, cookies, water, and soda. The judges/coaches lounge will also have snacks, drinks, and a crock pot meal train for a variety dinner with vegetarian and meat friendly options. Saturday will be similar.

FEES AND FINES:

The cost for all events is $5.00 per student, per day, and $10.00 per team, per day.

School fees are 25.00 per day.

There will be a $40 fine for drops after 5:00pm on Wednesday December 13, 2023.

** No Show Judges will incur a $25 fine on behalf of their school for each round missed**

Please make sure your judges know how to use the website Tabroom and come prepared with a tablet/laptop for judging, any chargers they need, and the knowledge that we need them and their patience and cooperation to run things smoothly and efficiently. :)

Event Divisions:

Junior Varsity/JV — For novice and mid-level non-novice students; the ones that are not brand new but are not at the top of their events and would benefit from balanced competition.

Varsity - Meant for your more advanced/competitive students or those looking for a challenge.

Entry Limits - PLEASE READ:

We want students to enter as many events as possible to get those NSDA points & experience!

With that said, here is what we recommend for max participation and least stress: Students can (at their own risk) double enter in up to 2 live speech events PER panel and 1 debate event since events will be held on separate days. That means 1 debate event Friday night, 2 speech events in Panel A, 2 speech events in Panel B.

Students may also enter into all 3 asynch events in addition to the live events since there will be no attendance conflict. We will be strict with times to keep the tournament running smoothly so student time management is key. Judges will be told to wait for 15 minutes after listening to all speakers in attendance to hear any double/triple entered entries but if they don’t show within that time, they will be marked as a no show and we will move on to the next round.

Event Topics/Explanations:

Debate:

Policy (CX): Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase fiscal redistribution in the United States by adopting a federal jobs guarantee, expanding Social Security, and/or providing a basic income.

Lincoln Douglas (LD): Resolved: The United States ought to prohibit the extraction of fossil fuels from federal public lands and waters.

Public Forum (PF): Resolved: The United States federal government should forgive all federal student loan debt.

Big Questions (BQ): Resolved: Belief in the supernatural is incompatible with belief in science.

Congress (CON): For Congress, there will be as many houses as necessary for debate. No more than 25 students will be permitted in each house. Student bill/resolutions should be appropriate and productive in nature. A docket will be released prior to the tournament and will primarily be pulled from the legislation uploaded to the UDCA website. DOCKET IS ATTACHED TO THE LEFT AND WILL BE COMPRISED OF NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER BILLS

Poetry: Competitors can alternate between poetry and prose, but it is not required. Piece should be the same for each round. Fully memorized, no props or notes used. Pieces should be 4-7 minutes at most. Please use trigger/content warnings if and when applicable.

Character Spar: This unique event is Spar with a twist. In addition to being given three topics to choose from, each competitor will also be given a list of three characters (i.e. Drill Sergeant, Robin Williams, Pres. Obama). They must choose one and spar debate as the character they chose. A regular Spar ballot will be used with an additional column covering how well they debated in character.

Storytelling: HOLIDAY THEME. Theme is not required but preferred. This event will be IN PERSON this year, not an asynch. Pieces should be memorized preferably but can be read from a book they bring with them. Students may choose to sit or stand as they deliver their piece. Pieces should be 5-7 minutes in length. Stories must be school/audience appropriate and NOT of original creation.

**Newscaster: Students can enter this ASYNCH event by recording and uploading a video to Youtube/Google drive. In this event competitors present the news (real or fictional) as a news anchor or news anchor team of up to three individuals. The news can be presented in a serious nature if you choose, however, satirical news presentations in the vein of Steven Colbert or John Stewart are preferred. Stories should be original in nature and created by the students about real or fictional events. 5-7 min video cap. No video editing or props allowed.

**Declamation: Students can enter this ASYNCH event by recording and uploading a video to Youtube/Google drive. In this event, students will choose, memorize, and perform a speech given in a public setting by a prominent individual. It should be 7-10 min in length. Commencement guest speakers, TEDx talks, etc. can be used for inspiration. Pieces should be memorized and delivered without notes.

**Lip Sync: Students in groups of 1-4 can enter this ASYNCH event by recording and uploading a video to Youtube/Google drive. Song choices must be school appropriate and no longer than 4:00 minutes. NO editing but students should strive to have fun with it. Think Lip Sync Battle. No props or assistance from anyone not in the piece. VIDEOS MUST BE UPLOADED ON TIME WITH WORKING LINKS.

JUDGES:

In order to run a timely tournament each school is required to bring a portion of judges.

FRIDAY JUDGES:

One judge for every (2) TWO Varsity PF, LD, and Policy Teams.

One judge for every (3) THREE novice PF and LD.

One Judge for every (5) FIVE Congress competitors.

Due to the unique nature of single-flighting Varsity LD and PF, any schools without their full judge commitment will have their Varsity LD and PF entries receive a Bye-Loss for every round we are short judges. Example, a school with 3 varsity entries is required to have 2 judges, but they only bring 1 judge. One of their entries (not all three) will receive a “Bye-Loss” for every round we are short judges.

SATURDAY JUDGES:

One judge for every 4 in IE’s.
